Sparkling Grapefruit Margarita Recipe

Grapefruit Margaritas

It’s almost the weekend and what better way to welcome warmer weather than with a fresh grapefruit margarita? Bright, slightly tart, and perfectly balanced, this cocktail is a delightful twist on the classic margarita — especially when made with freshly squeezed citrus.

I’m picky about margaritas: give me fresh-squeezed juice over sugary bottled mixes any day. Fresh grapefruit juice brings a crisp, slightly bitter note that keeps the drink light and never cloying. Paired with tequila and a touch of orange liqueur, it becomes a refreshing cocktail that’s ideal for spring and summer gatherings.

Grapefruit Margaritas

This grapefruit margarita is incredibly simple to make. All you need is freshly squeezed grapefruit and lime, silver (blanco) tequila, and an orange liqueur such as Cointreau or triple sec. I prefer it served on the rocks, but you can blend it if you like a frozen margarita. The whole process takes about ten minutes from start to finish.

My favorite finishing touch is a chili sugar rim. The sweet crunch of sugar balances the tangy grapefruit while a hint of chili powder adds a subtle heat that elevates the flavor. If you have turbinado sugar (raw sugar), use it for added texture and a richer flavor; granulated sugar works fine too. If you’re watching your sugar intake, skip the sugar rim or swap in a chili salt rim for a savory contrast.

These grapefruit margaritas are made with freshly squeezed grapefruit and a touch of lime for brightness. A chili sugar rim is optional but highly recommended for a sweet-spicy contrast.

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1 1/2 ounces silver (blanco) tequila
  • 1 ounce Cointreau or other orange liqueur (triple sec)
  • Juice of 1/2 lime (or to taste)
  • Agave nectar to sweeten, to taste
  • Ice
  • Grapefruit or lime wedges for garnish

Optional chili sugar rim

  • 1/4 cup granulated or turbinado sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to your preferred heat)

Instructions

  1. If using the chili sugar rim, mix the sugar and chili powder in a shallow bowl until evenly combined.
  2. Moisten the rim of your glass with a damp cloth or a lime wedge. Dip the rim into the chili sugar mixture until coated, then set the glass aside.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine grapefruit juice, tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and agave nectar to taste. Add ice and shake until well chilled.
  4. Fill the rimmed glass with ice. Strain the margarita over the ice and garnish with a small wedge of grapefruit or lime. Serve immediately.

Serving suggestions and variations:

  • For a frozen version, combine all ingredients with a cup of ice in a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Swap agave nectar for simple syrup or honey syrup if preferred; adjust sweetness to taste.
  • For a lower-sugar option, omit the sugar rim and reduce or omit the agave nectar.
  • Try grapefruit with a reposado tequila for a richer, oakier note, or use mezcal for a smoky variation.
  • Add a splash of club soda for a lighter, fizzy grapefruit margarita.

Tips for best results:

  • Use ripe grapefruits for maximum juice and flavor; pink or ruby red grapefruits are sweeter than white grapefruit.
  • Chill your glasses ahead of time to keep the drink colder longer.
  • Taste and adjust: grapefruit acidity varies, so start with less lime and agave, then adjust to your preference.
  • If you’d like a bolder citrus profile, increase the grapefruit juice to 4 ounces and slightly reduce the tequila.
