I have a simple morning routine of four things I do every day, and it genuinely changes how my day goes. I’m sharing it here because these small habits can help you get ready faster and transform your mornings into productive, calm starts.

Our children are allowed out of bed around 7:00, so that’s when our day begins. When I get up, I follow the same routine most mornings. The very first thing I do is greet each child with a hug and tell them, “Good morning — I missed you while you were sleeping!” I say this to each child every day because it sets a positive tone for them and for me. A warm welcome makes mornings feel joyful and starts the day on the right foot.

Here are the four routines that shape my morning:
1. Make my bed.
I make the bed as soon as I get up. An unmade bed can make the whole room feel unsettled; when the bed is made, I already feel a little more put together and like I’ve gotten a head start on the day. If my husband is awake before me, he sometimes does it, but usually we rise at the same time and it’s one of the first things I tackle.

2. Drink a glass of water.
I wasn’t always a water drinker, and I still enjoy diet soda and sparkling water occasionally, but I’ve found that drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning gives me a small, noticeable energy boost. It helps wake my body gently and is an easy, healthy habit to keep.
3. Clean the bathroom.
After I’m dressed, I brush my teeth and wash my face, then I take a few minutes to tidy the bathroom. I clear anything that doesn’t belong on the countertop, wipe the vanity, and quickly clean the toilet handle and seat. This takes about three minutes but makes the space feel fresh and ready for the day. A clean bathroom sets a calm tone and prevents small messes from piling up.

4. Empty the dishwasher.
I empty the dishwasher first thing in the morning. The kids help with this as part of their chores, and I pitch in. If the dishwasher is full, dirty dishes end up in the sink, and if the sink is full, dishes get left on the countertops. Clearing the dishwasher prevents that chain reaction. I prefer clear countertops — it makes wiping surfaces easier and meal prep simpler because I’m not constantly moving things around.

I love having uncluttered counters. It reduces mental clutter too: with surfaces clear, it’s quicker to clean, quicker to prepare food, and easier to focus on the tasks that matter. On one side of our kitchen I keep the kids’ cotton ball reward jars visible so they remember their responsibilities and can add or remove a ball as needed.

Depression and clutter often go hand in hand — recognizing that link can be the first step toward a calmer home. I also use a simple planner to help with routines, meal planning, schedules, and chores. Small systems and consistent habits make daily life smoother and reduce stress for the whole family.

These four habits—making the bed, drinking water, quickly tidying the bathroom, and emptying the dishwasher—are small, practical actions that add up. They help me keep a tidy home, start each day with intention, and reduce the friction that can make mornings stressful. Try them for a week and see how your mornings change.
